Dota 2’s meta is always changing, especially with patch adjustments. Naturally, the once top-tier heroes can drop in popularity after an update, leaving their place to another. The latest Dota 2 Patch 7.40b didn’t change a ton, especially in terms of item balance. However, we did see a couple of nerfs come into play.
If you are looking to increase your MMR (who isn’t?) or just want to have fun in the Turbo mode, this Dota 2 hero tier list has you covered. Pick one of the in-meta heroes, give them a go, and see if you gel well with them or not. There’s plenty of choice in the S-Tier, so you are never short on hero or lane selection.
How Kyusai rated Dota 2 heroes
I consulted public match data, which included win and pick rates. I also checked trends among pro players and big Dota 2 YouTubers and streamers. Considering the current patch, lanes, items, and facet synergy are also important when making a tier list.
While the S-Tier Dota 2 heroes are currently in the meta, it’s not a hard list. You are free to pick your comfort hero, even in ranked matches. Counterpicking is also extremely important; if a mid-tier hero counters someone, feel free to pick that—anything to get the win and increase MMR.
Dota 2 S-Tier heroes

S-Tier Dota 2 heroes are the best this patch. These heroes are meta picks that will carry you in almost any condition. Some of them are easy to pick and learn too, so you won’t have to put in a lot of matches to be good.
Pick Ursa if you want to do extreme single-target damage and reliably take down Roshan. Get him some good items like Blink Dagger and Black King Bar to dominate the early to mid game. Puck is a mid-pick pick, especially if you want to clear lanes fast and help other lanes secure kills. If you are just starting, Axe is among the best offlaners.
| Carry | Ursa, Juggernaut, Slark, Abbadon, Broodmother, Windranger, Morphling |
| Mid | Puck, Ember Spirit, Queen of Pain, Storm Spirit, Viper, Pangolier, Tiny, Invoker, Primal Beast |
| Offlane | Visage, Kunkka, Legion Commander, Undying, Tidehunter, Timbersaw, Centaur, Axe |
| Support | Tusk, Clockwork, Shadow Shaman, Shadow Demon, KOTL, Chen, Dazzle, Treant Protector, Largo, Witch Doctor, Jakiro, Warlock, Pugna, Io |
Dota 2 A-Tier heroes

A-Tier heroes are also good picks, just not in the current meta. That doesn’t mean they can’t take on the S-Tier heroes, though. You can go head-to-head with meta picks if you know how to play. If you are comfortable with an A-Tier hero, I recommend sticking with it rather than an S-Tier pick.
Sven is a reliable pick that’s easy to learn and play. He can take care of minions incredibly fast, has good survivability, and can do a great amount of burst damage. Bane is a great offensive support thanks to his spells that pierce spell immunity.
| Carry | Sven, Medusa, Dragon Knight, Bloodseeker, Drow Ranger, Wraith King, Spectre |
| Mid | Slardar, Monkey King, Huskar, Templar Assassin, Leshrac, Sniper, Necrophos, Shadow Fiend, Mirana |
| Offlane | Lycan, Night Stalker, Beastmaster, Brewmaster, Bristleback |
| Support | Bane, Silencer, Dark Willow, Omniknight, Winter Wyvern, Snapfire, Hoodwink, Vengeful Spirit, Lion, Batrider, Pudge |
Dota 2 B-Tier heroes

These are the middle-of-the-road picks. If you are already familiar with any of these, they can work well. Mostly, pick these if you know you’ll counter an enemy hero. While they aren’t half bad, they lack either mid or late-game prowess to facilitate big team moves.
Sand King is a reliable crowd-control pick; just bury your head in the sand and deal damage to enemies. Phoenix, Dark Seer, and Death Prophet are conditional picks that can go great against some enemies.
| Carry | Faceless Void, Lifestealer, Troll Warlord, Anti-Mage, Clinkz, Kez |
| Mid | Sand King, Tinker, Outworld Devourer, Lina, Earthshaker, Death Prophet |
| Offlane | Magnus, Underlord, Doom, Dark Seer, Terrorblade |
| Support | Enchantress, Phoenix, Rubick, Ogre Magi, Bounty Hunter, Nyx Assassin, Ringmaster, Weaver, Elder Titan, Marci, Disruptor, Nature’s Prophet |
Dota 2 C-Tier heroes

The Dota 2 C-Tier heroes aren’t too bad; they can still be viable if you know how to play them. These heroes are best picked as hard counters to enemy heroes. I personally love playing Razor, despite my friends yelling in voice chat. So, pick whichever hero you feel confident with and make them work.
Luna has been around for a long time, and she can still push lanes at extremely high speeds. She can take down towers with Moon Glaives, too, so if you are keen on pushing, she works. Enigma’s ultimate, Black Hole, is one of the most powerful ultimates in the game. His ultimate can lock down and damage multiple enemies in one go.
| Carry | Razor, Luna, Alchemist, Naga Siren, Gyrocopter, Phantom Assassin, Phantom Lancer |
| Mid | Void Spirit, Earth Spirit, Lone Druid |
| Offlane | Enigma, Spirit Breaker, Mars |
| Support | Techies, Ancient Apparition, Lich, Crystal Maiden, Oracle |
Dota 2 D-Tier heroes

These heroes are better left alone in the current patch. Sure, you can still play them, but you’ll be at a significant disadvantage, especially against S-Tier heroes. They are fun to play, though, so if you are playing casually, you can try these out.
Meepo can dominate the early game thanks to his excellent farming speed. Zeus still has great magic damage output, especially if you want to kite enemies from afar. I love playing as Venomancer because I like DOT heroes (yes, I play Teemo in League); however, he does not do much in the late game.
| Carry | Meepo, Muerta, Riki, Chaos Knight |
| Mid | Zeus, Arc Warden |
| Offlane | Dawnbreaker |
| Support | Skywrath Mage, Venomancer, Grimstroke |
