A new report claims that FromSoftware itself rejected the proposal for a Bloodborne remake from Bluepoint Games, shortly before the studio’s closure.
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the concept of a full Bluepoint developed Bloodborne remake was pitched to FromSoftware several games. The report claims it was “early 2025” when Bluepoint approached FromSoftware, and the studio rejected the proposal, that it: “didn’t want it to happen”.
This information is claimed by “people familiar with the process”. Shuhei Yoshida, former President of SIE, theorized that this could have happened because FromSoftware president, Hidetaka Miyazaki “didn’t want anyone else to touch it” but did not have the time to do a remake internally.
Bluepoint’s final video game to be published before the studio’s closure was Demon’s Souls in 2020. It was a ground-up remake and reimagining of FromSoftware’s first in its long-line of tough-as-nails action-RPGs. The report claims that the studio pitched an updated version of its 2018 remake of Team Ico’s Shadow of the Colossus, but it was turned down by Sony.
Without the blessing of FromSoftware to remake Bloodborne, Bluepoint reportedly pitched other PlayStation studios to develop projects within existing franchises. This is said to include a spin-off of Ghost of Tsushima; however, this did not materialize.
It’s claimed the final nail in Bluepoint’s coffin came when Sony announced the God of War trilogy remake with its involvement earlier this month. Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired Bluepoint Games on September 30, 2021, only to, effectively, do nothing with the manpower it could have provided. Shuttering the studio after five years, and having it suffer multiple rejected proposals, including the Bloodborne remake.
Bluepoint Games deserved better
Kyusai has previously covered how painful the loss of Bluepoint Games is, especially to Souls fans. Prior to its closure, the studio developed an incredible reimagining of the 2009 RPG that kicked off its own sub-genre. It’s such a shame that the talented studio would not have been able to work its magic on bringing Bloodborne into 2026 respectfully.
Bloodborne remains my favorite of the Souls franchise. Sure, I love Dark Souls and Elden Ring, enough to write an entire book featuring them, but Miyazaki’s 2015 opus stands above it in my opinion. The aggressive risk-versus-reward gameplay loop, speed, and atmosphere are genuinely unparalleled, and it’s such a shame it’s still stuck on the PS4.
For as much as I love Bloodborne, even considering it among my top 10 games of all time, replaying it is a challenging experience. The game remains locked at 30fps and 1080p even when played on a PS5, and suffers from framerate issues, freezes, and slowdown, which is why a proposed remake (or even just a proper current-generation patch), would have been invaluable.
Sure, PC emulation of Bloodborne has come a long way, bringing the game up to 60fps with vastly improved lighting and shadows, but this isn’t ideal for most players. Sony has had an open goal to bring one of its most beloved games up to scratch, and for whatever arbitrary reason, it has yet to deliver. Leave it to the community to give gamers what they want, but it still far from perfect.
Such a phenomenal game deserves better, so did Bluepoint, and so do you.
