Is it a little over-eager to get excited about a new Pokémon TCG Pocket set after there’s only been one – count them, one – partial card reveal? Yes. Is that going to stop me from being excited about Ruler of the Skies and what Mega Rayquaza ex might mean for the competitive meta? Absolutely not.
As shown off in a sneak preview on the official Pocket social media channels, Ruler of the Skies is going to feature the iconic Mega Rayquaza as its central character. Here’s why this upcoming Pocket set looks so promising.
I’ve got high hopes for Pocket’s Ruler of the Skies
Pokémon TCG Pocket: Ruler of the Skies was initially shown off in a social media post on June 18, 2026, alongside a teaser for the upcoming Mega Evolution: Delta Reign set for the standard Pokémon TCG, with a late July release promised.
Further information was then teased in a post on July 22, 2026, showing a foreboding shot of Mega Rayquaza in the shadows – and I’ve been counting down the hours until we can learn more about the set ever since.
Based on the limited information that’s available, Ruler of the Skies looks like it could be one of the biggest expansion sets or themed booster packs of 2026, largely due to how much power Mega Rayquaza tends to hold across the Pokémon world.
When Mega Rayquaza was eligible for VGC competition, the beast pulled in a mighty win record throughout Regionals and Internationals, as per Limitless VGC stats. VGC is a different ball park to Pocket, of course, but it’s a strong indicator of how much weight The Pokémon Company tends to put behind this creature.
Similarly, Mega Rayquaza decks have made a significant dent in the TCG scene, with both Regional wins and International placements.
If a Pokémon has strong stats and a historical record in other Pokémon games and competitive categories – along with a significant power level in the lore across games and the anime – then it’s a safe bet to assume that it’ll be a beast in Pokémon TCG Pocket.
This has me hopeful for how Mega Rayquaza will look in the Pocket scene; I’m predicting that it’ll leave a mark on the competitive meta, likely shooting to the top of this season’s meta-friendly deck list.
The Mega Rayquaza card Type has not been revealed yet, but if it does end up being a Dragon Type over Colorless, I’m confident that there’ll be enough tech in the rest of the pack to mitigate any potential issues with Energy Token generation.
Outside of Mega Rayquaza potentially being a competitive threat, Ruler of the Skies looks like it’s going to be a wonderful set for collectors.
Mega Rayquaza has, arguably, one of the best Mega Evolution designs in the Pokémon universe, and the teaser trailer for the upcoming set highlighted just how awe-inspiring it looks in motion. I’m hoping we’ll see a new immersive card focusing on the Sky High Pokémon.
Ruler of the Skies is looking like it’ll be a behemoth of a Pokémon TCG Pocket set based on what’s been revealed so far, and I’d recommend keeping an eye out if you’re a competitive player or a card collector. Hopefully, more information will be revealed soon so fans know what to expect from this new Pocket set.
