Order Automatica is a dark and strategic auto-battler where you take part in occult rituals, using hordes of minions to tear down opponents and move up through the ranks of a cult. Battles in Order Automatica are automated and take place on a 3×3 grid, meaning the preparation stage is more important than the actual battles themselves.
One of the best things about this roguelite experience is that it can be enjoyed on multiple platforms. Thanks to the game team, I got the chance to check out Order Automatica on both mobile and PC – here’s a breakdown of which platform is better.
Is Order Automatica better on PC or mobile?
Order Automatica is described as “chess with demons” on its App Store page, which I think makes sense as a gameplay summary.
You place demons and minions on tiles, then watch battles play out like magic, with special items and unique enemies messing with your carefully laid plans. Your army of minions grows as you progress, but enemies get trickier to deal with as well.
Unlike other games in the roguelike and roguelite world, Order Automatica isn’t especially hands-on in terms of gameplay input. You don’t need to be pressing buttons too often or quickly reacting to anything in combat; the core gameplay loop is relatively leisurely, with plenty of time to think about your choices.
I’ve played through Order Automatica on PC and mobile now, and haven’t found any noticeable performance issues on either platform – but the mobile experience stands out as slightly better, based on my testing.
Usually with platform comparisons, one stands out as smoother than the other, or one platform presents a unique glitch or quirk. This wasn’t the case with Order Automatica, as I didn’t notice any bugs during any of my playthroughs; great as a player, not so great as a critic trying to find the ideal platform to play a game on.
However, I did find that the controls and UI for Order Automatica felt like a much more natural fit for a mobile game. The battle grids hug the screen more snugly, and it’s ever-so-slightly easier to drag and drop minions on the touch screen as opposed to on PC.
It’s also the ideal game to take with you on the go, too. Order Automatica can be enjoyed in short bursts; it’s easy to pick up and put down where needed, which makes it a fantastic mobile game. Personally, I’ve been playing it while on the bus or waiting for appointments.
Playing Order Automatica on PC isn’t a negative experience by any stretch of the imagination, though – in fact, it’s one of my favorite roguelites that I’ve reviewed for Kyusai this year. The game runs beautifully, even on a low-range PC, and it’s intuitive in its controls and style of play.
However, if you’re looking to buy the game on just one platform, I’d recommend Order Automatica on mobile over PC. The differences are small, but the gameplay loop feels marginally more at home on mobile, and the controls are a comfortable fit for a smaller touchscreen. It’s an easy game to pick up and enjoy in short bursts, making it ideal to take with you on your day to day adventures.
Mobile gaming isn’t for everyone, naturally; some people aren’t keen on the idea of playing a game on a small screen or taking up storage space on their phone if they use it for work. But if you’re big into roguelites and enjoy mobile games, picking up the mobile version of Order Automatica is well worth your time.
